How to Protect Yourself From The Latest Round of Nasty Facebook Worms
by Heidi White

Facebook worms have been worming their way back into the social networking giants playground, causing great concern and infecting hundreds of thousands of users in recent weeks.

This article hopes to provides some tips on how to Facebook safely.

There are basically two types of Facebook worms affecting users at this time.

Clickjacking
The first type, called Clickjacking, is a web coding technique, which runs a javascript or flash program within a users browser. The program is invisible to the user, and once activated takes over the users’ mouse, forcing it to ‘like’ a the same link that infected them, spreading it to all of the users friends. At the same time, keylogger, spyware and other malicious programs are installed onto the users computer. This “like” button worm, a clikcjacking type worm, hit Facebook over the Memorial Day weekend, and has allegedly already infected hundreds of thousands of users. At first it seemed like only a few titles were being used, such as those listed below –

‘This man takes a picture of himself EVERYDAY for 8 YEARS!!’
The Prom Dress That Got This Girl Suspended From School’
‘LOL This girl gets OWNED after a POLICE OFFICER reads her STATUS MESSAGE,’
‘This Girl Has An Interesting Way Of Eating A Banana, Check It Out!’

But now it appears the messages are updating more frequently, so it’s not possible to know which ones to avoid. Any intriguing or popular subject could be the latest title change, whether it’s about the BP Oil Spill or Justin Beiber.
If you choose to click on the “like” button from one of these infected messages – you will get redirected to a blank page with a simple message reading, ‘Click here to continue,’ or sometimes ‘Click here to confirm you are over 18.’ At this point – if you don’t completely shut down your computer – you’re probably already compromized.

If you click anything on this page, your computer will be immediately infected with the Troj/lframe-ET worm which hijacks your mouse then simultaneously:

1) causes you to send a fake “I just liked this link” message to all your friends, perpetuating the worm
2) installs any number of malicious viruses, Trojans, and keylogging programs onto your computer, allowing criminals access to your next login to your Bank of America account and worse. This current worm is spreading in a way very similar to the Fbhole virus which struck Facebook last month.

Tricked into Downloading Malicious Software
The other type of Facebook Worm currently causing concern is the type that tricks users into users into downloading malicious software, under the guise of downloading software needed to run a fake video. The Koobface Criminals have released a new variation of the worm, known as Koobface – or or the Fake Video Link Worm, which first struck Facebook last year and was supposedly put to rest last July. According to Facebook, “the program is spreading via Facebook messages that look as if they’re videos.

“These fake video links often say something like “LOL you look funny.”  When the user clicks on the fake video link to see the it, she is taken to a new website and asked to download special software in order to see the video. That software is malicious,” concludes Facebook.

Facebook is downplaying the current impact of this worm and won’t state how many have been affected, suggesting “users with up-to-date anti-virus software are generally well protected from this and similar viruses.”

What can you do to protect yourself?

Other than quitting Facebook altogether, there are some things the prudent user can do to avoid being taken down by one of these Facebook worms.

Like Less

Use the Facebook ‘like’ feature less frequently, or stop using it completely for the time being. Many companies are sending messages to their employes to not use the “like” feature at all.

However, if you do want to ‘like’ something, there are ways to make sure you are not liking something potentially dangerous.

1) Avoid liking anything that ‘seems’ strange
2) Don’t assume that just because it was ‘liked’ by a trusted friend that its safe
3) Hover over a link to see where its going BEFORE you click.
4) If the hover doesn’t give you a URL, right-click while hovering to read the URL in the Windows “Properties” feature.
5) Make sure the url shows the link is staying within Facebook:

GOOD   http://www.facebook.com/pages/inside-facebook

and not being Redirected to some outside page:

BAD  http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.outsidelink.com

While redirecting to an outside link is allowed inside of Facebook and doesn’t always mean there’s a suspicious site at the other end, at times like this, it’s definately a major red-flag, and it’s how the clickjacking type web programs avoid Facebooks’ comprehensive virus filtering and security systems. To be safe, if the link is a redirect and you don’t know for sure that the web site is safe, we highly recommend you don’t go there.

Finally, the most foolproof way to avoid these worms would be to quit Facebook. Or at the very least go on-the-wagon until things get straightened out. However, unless you are ready for a 12-Step program for social networking addiction, following the best practices of keeping your anti-virus software current, and paying attention to the where the links are going BEFORE you click on them, may be only adequate way to keep you in the social networking game without giving criminals access to your computer and all it’s secrets.

Teens Are Spending $3 Billion a Year on Ringtones

musicamazonlinksAccording to Funtonia.com the ringtone industry is bringing in close to 3 Billion Dollars annually. And since teens make up the bulk of the mobile crazed ringtone buyer population, it just proves again that there is big money targeting the young.

Ringtones are downloaded directly to the cell phone when purchased from an online ringtone provider like Funtonia.

Instead of rushing to the record store to buy the latest ’single’ of a popular artist, that cool fav song starts playing when someone calls or texts. Default ringtones that come with the phone are so so boring. Now, everyone can express themselves by hearing bits of their favorites artists whenever they get a call.

Advance searching features make it easy to find the wallpaper, ringtone or entire song or album from popular artists. This link uses the search term “beiber” for Justin Bieber, a currently insanely popular artist.

Justin Bieber – Top Ringtone Request

—————–

Here’s a screen shot of a YouTube marketer who’s going beyond the ringtone and providing a link to the iTunes or Amazon site for the song mentioned in the video.

The Lin Yu Chun Domain Grab Saga – Part 1

A novice internet marketer thought she had lucked onto a rising trend early. When the previously unknown (to the rest of the world) Taiwanese performer, Lin Yu Chun wowed the judges with his performance of Whitney Houston’s hit song “I will always love you,” postings of the performance went up on YouTube on April 7th. By April 8th, the viral potential of this baby faced singer with the Susan Boyle sized body and nerdy bowl haircut had made itself apparent.

And since it had only been alive for 24 hours, our internet marketer thought to do a ‘domain grab’ and start building a site to attract Lin Yu Chun fans. Sure enough – the Lin Yu Chun videos views shot up and up – but our internet marketer’s attempts to capitalize on this properly predicted trend hit some major snags along the way.

Here’s the story:

UPDATE: As of 4/23/10 the fan club site is still at LinYuChunFanClub.com and the sale is under dispute. If the site is forced to move, the new location will be .net. In the meantime – go here to see the Lin Yu Chun Fan Club site: LinYuChunFanClub.com

Still pretty green when it comes to building websites, she immediately asked her friends on the website Warrior Forum for advice. The Warrior Forum is a huge site with 1000’s of experienced and learning internet marketers who discuss making money in Internet Marketing.

Advice was given straight out to build a website and provide products for sale, such as T-Shirts or Posters.

She even received an email query – “Would you accept $4000?” from some so-called domain broker. But her buddies on the WF suggested it was a scam – designed to milk money from her. “Did they ask for an appraisal?” they wondered. “Yep, that’s exactly what they recommended,” she replied. So, she wrote back telling them if they wanted the domain – then they would have to be the highest bidder. So far, it doesn’t look like they placed a bid.

Here’s the original video that started it all:

Author & Publisher Promotions

The Zizish Guide is starting something new in the field of Author & Publisher promotions.

Here’s how it works.

Author & Publishers who have new content such as eBooks, software, books published on Amazon.com or elsewhere in normal hard copy – but available in electronic format for our readers, will be invited to provide a FREE down-loadable copy of their product (for a limited time) – exclusively for The Zizish Guide subscribers.

In exchange, The Zizish Guide subscriber will read, use & review the author/publisher’s book/product and will write reviews (hopefully postive reviews) at a location requested by the author and in other places if available, (including in The Zizish Guide – reviews section.)

Once as a Zizish Subscriber you complete the review(s) using a special Zizish Guide format, you’ll want to come back here to post a link to your review in a special section. You’ll get credits for every review you write and link back to.

Depending on how well this program goes over and how many new Author and Publisher’s sign up, we hope to have some Prizes or Thank You Gifts for our top Zizisih Guide reviewers.

Our first promotion should be ready soon.

Regards,
Heidi White

Warrior Forum – I’m So Glad I Found You!

How I got to this point – Warrior Forum (by far the best resource I’ve found.)

If you are new to Internet Marketing, I want to wish you success in your journey. Eventually – when I have a bit more of a success story to share about the things I’m doing that are actually working – I’ll start passing my techniques on.

In the meantime, I recommend you go over to the Warrior Forum, join the War Room and start reading and participating in the forum. I’d recommend you stay out of the WSO section initially and Stay out of the CPA, PPC section as well.

Focus on the Main Internet Marketing Section and absolutely join the War Room (which is less than $40 – one time – and so, so worth it!) Once you have your War Room membership, you can get an almost unlimited supply of free tools, trainings, ebooks, and more from this section Private Discussions
available only to War Room members.)

Most of those free tools will introduce you to a certain Warrior and many will point you to a program they sell that you can buy. It may be hard to resist spending money on these, and if you can afford $7 here and $37 there – go ahead. But, chances are you can learn many of the tips and techniques available in their particular WSO for free by just getting involved in the vast amount of information exchanging that goes on in the Main Forum, or downloading and reading the eBooks, courses and video training available for free to War Room Members in the Private Discussions section.

One bit of advice: You’ll want to spend some time getting a feel for who you want to trust. Some of the people on the forum recommend strategies that are considered Black Hat or that are just plain illegal (such as downloading and changing someone’s video, then reloading it up to YouTube to promote your own site) – but that’s just the way it is. Often they will reveal their morally indifferent personalities in their posts or even in the free stuff they give away in the War Room.

The WSO section is a whole other story. The headlines and sales pitches are intended to grab you and often aren’t true – and most people understand that and they are OK with it.

For example: “This will get you making money tonight!” may be the headline, but chances are it will take a week or longer to implement the strategy suggested. They may not be something you can implement right away either, as they may require you already have something to sell, a huge list of people interested in what you sell, or a JV (Joint Venture) partner relationship that you can tap into to sell whatever it is that will make you rich tonight. See where I’m coming from?

Don’t fall for the get-rich-quick stuff. It all takes work and it’s Oh What a Process, but it’s worth it.

Most experienced Warriors understand that just about any technique will work IF YOU DO IT PROPERLY. But most people either never implement (because they don’t have the skills, resources, knowledge, temperment, desire, time or money to implement) exactly as outlined by any expert. So, anyone who bitches about the fact that they spent $7 on a WSO and didn’t make money that night will not get much sympathy from those who put in some serious hard work before they made any money.

Keep in mind, many of the WSO’s will promise instant success and chances are it won’t happen – so, rather than buy too many programs out of the shoot – try absorbing some of what’s available for free, so you can make your spending decisions more intelligently.

The place is incredible for information and knowledge. I’ve learned so much there – I can’t begin to tell you.

That’s it for now – good luck.

Learning Internet Market – Oh What a Process

I’ve never pretended to be an expert. In fact, the reason I’m doing this blog is to have a record of my own internet marketing journey. If anyone wants to follow me, great – if not – that’s OK too.

Oh What a Process!

Once anyone makes the decision to begin to learn Internet Marketing (which is the phrase generically used by anyone who attempts to make money online) you’ll most likely go through a process that looks like this:

Phase 1 – A Strong Desire to Change

Something about your life has steered you to look at IM as a way to change your life. Perhaps you hate your job, or have lost it. Perhaps you want to work from home. Perhaps you are tired of making someone else rich. Somehow you got to this point and you are now looking for your piece of the pie.

Phase 2 – Learning Curve

It doesn’t matter where you start in IM, you will no doubt find that there is a tremendous learning curve. Perhaps you just want to learn how to blog, and the mere process of getting your first Wordpress site up, takes a year, or you get bogged down in creating content and praying for traffic – which doesn’t come in.
So, you try to learn strategies for building links or improving SEO and that turns out to be far more complex and challenging then you ever thought. Before you know it, you are overwhelmed with techniques, ideas, strategies, programs, passwords to remember, rules to follow (and break) and so much stuff you might find yourself….

Phase 3 – Overwhelmed and or Stuck

This phase happens to all of us, probably, and no doubt many of us who reach this phase, give up, quit, or settle for doing IM as a hobby instead of as the vehicle to get us out of debt, out of the job we hate and into a brighter financially independent future. But some of us find the power and resources to keep plodding through the challenges and failures so we can actually make something happen and when we do we…

Phase 4 – Build on Little Successes and Scale Up our Efforts

This is the one thing I can say I’m proudest of at this point in my IM career. I’m totally at this phase right now. My successes have been minor so far, but they exist! And I’ve learned how to do so many things I didn’t know how to do before. I know that if I just keep working hard at accomplishing specific tasks that ultimately result in a financial return, and keep tweaking and improving my systems and strategies that I will get where I want to be – provided I don’t quit, because I’m not rich yet.

What is Article Marketing?

Earn money writing

Article Marketing is a term used in Internet Marketing circles to describe the promotion of a site by publishing articles elsewhere on and off the internet which link people back to the original site you want to promote.

Let’s take one of my niche product websites, Bread Machines and Recipes as an example.

This site was purchased, more or less as-is, pre-built with keyword rich articles already written on it. It’s pretty, but the content is not original. The seller of the site created duplicate sites with the same content and sold it to other people.  Some people say there is no penalty for duplicate content, but I have a hard time accepting that there is any advantage to it either. When I get a chance,  I plan to replace all the pre-packaged content with original articles and recipes and reviews of my own.

And how does that relate to article marketing? Well, let’s go on over to Ezine Articles, hands down the number one article directory on the web. Some article marketers will tell you to always submit an article to Ezine first, others say that’s hogwash and think you are stupid as dirt to submit to them first rather than posting your own unique content on your own website or blog first. If you’ve got about 3-4 days to review this post over at the Warrior Forum, you can read both sides of the debate and decide for yourself.

Warrior Forum Ezine First or Second Questions – Monster Post

So – you write an original article publish it on your site and then submit it to Ezine. Then you wait 3-7 days for an approval. Now what?

Next, you change or don’t change the article and start submitting it to the hundreds of other directories out there, correct? That’s what many people do, and it’s a ton of hard work.

So How Can You Automate Article Marketing?

If you are concerned about duplicate content – which may or may not be a real problem, then you’ll want to make each article unique before you submit it to another directory. In order to do this, you’ll have to completely rewrite your own article every time. If you plan on submitting to more than a handful of directories, this strategy might be too onerous.

And if you really want to spread your article variations around the net, there are thousands of article directories out there. It’s hard enough to find the time to submit 5 or 10 a day, but to have to rewrite the article a thousand different ways – well, you and I both know you are probably not going to do that.

So, you modify your approach. Totally original article goes first to Ezine or post on your site (depending on which side of the debate you want to lay your hat on,) then write another totally unique article, with perhaps less content, or make two articles out of the original one, make a semi unique version of each of those and send those out wholesale to the other major directories, and then to as many little (less important) directories.

Be sure you resource box get’s them back to your sales page, money making site, or
Squidoo lens. You may even want to use a pen name for these mega-duplicated-articles, so your own name isn’t linked to the hundreds of duplicates all over article directory land.

Wash, rinse repeat and watch your site traffic grow.

Getting Started in Internet Marketing

Getting Started in Internet Marketing

So you’ve decided you want to start an online business? Perhaps you’re tired of working at a 9 to 5 job, or perhaps you’ve been unemployed for months or years and have given up on finding another cushy job with benefits. Perhaps you’ve got children at home and after taxes, gas bills, and the cost of child-care, you’ve come to the conclusion that you’re not gaining anything, really, by staying in the corporate or off-line workplace.

Or maybe you are still holding onto your day job, and burning the midnight oil, hoping to one day replace your income with your online business. Or maybe you’ve already been doing this for a while and you wanted to see what The Zizish Guide was all about.

Whatever brought you here, I want to welcome you.

This blog is really targeted at the newcomer, as you will find many blogs are. Newcomers are like fresh meat in this industry, providing a constant flow of funds to established gurus, trainers and information providers. There are as many ways to make money in the online world as there are ways to lose money and it’s often difficult to know which path to take, which guru to trust and what strategies to concentrate your time on.

Like most endeavors that attract the multitudes, the majority of people who ‘attempt’ internet marketing and online business will fail. And as with most endeavors again, there will always be a percentage of participants who grasp the requirements necessary, find the right methodologies and manage to become raging successes.

And that’s what we want to discover in this blog. What works, how exactly does it work, and how can you and I get the same results by modeling the success of those who’ve already made money in a specific technique.

That’s why we call this blog, “The Zizish Guide.” We want to guide you through all the crap that’s out there. Hopefully you’ll be able to find one example of a strategy employed by others that fits your personality, interests, and abilities.

The only advice we want to offer straight out is to both dive right in and hold back.

Dive right in to learning, using as many free resources as you can find.

Hold back on spending money on the first system that appeals to you.

I know that seems odd for us to say, considering we have banner ads and affiliates that we promote on this site, but we just want you to understand that the average person who attempts internet marketing and then eventually gives up (without making any serious money) usually made the mistake of buying too many systems that promised the moon with great hopes and expectations, only to abandon that strategy in favor of the next shiny bullet when success wasn’t instant.

There are only so many basic strategies and they all can work for you. But nothing that cost $17 is going to make you a millionaire unless you provide the effort. So, we suggest you sign up for our newsletter or RSS feed so you don’t miss any future posts, interviews, product reviews and success case studies. You’ll want to get a general sense of the primary strategies and methods used to make money online, and educate yourself on their basic concepts using free resources (we’ll provide many in our Free Members Only Section – Just Opt-In) and then pick one area to focus on. Once you’ve decided on a method, begin at the beginning, stay focused on your project and let us know when it starts to work out for you. We’d love to write an article about your success someday.
